The Step Down Unit (SDU) is designed for patients who need a lower level of care than ICU but a higher level of care than Medical/Surgical unit. Med/Surg provides care to adult patients with a wide variety of acute illnesses or who are recovering from surgery. Responsibilities include greeting, transporting and comforting patients, running specimens to the lab, pharmacy runs, preparing admission paperwork, and other tasks to assist the medical staff.

STEPS TO BECOME AN ALAMEDA HEALTH SYSTEM VOLUNTEER

Step 1: Consider the Commitment

We require a commitment of one 4 hour shift per week for a minimum of one year. There are morning and afternoon shifts available Monday - Friday. All volunteers start off at the information desk and are required to complete 100 hours of service prior to transferring to a patient care floor volunteer position.

Step 2: Submit Application

To apply please visit the AHS website AlamedaHealthSystem.org then click Volunteers on the banner at the top of the page.

Step 3: Interview

We will contact you to setup an interview within a week or two.

Step 4: Orientation

If accepted, you will be invited to attend an orientation covering both hospital and Volunteer Department policies, procedures, and other important information.

Step 5: Health Screening

After the orientation you will be able to make an appointment with AHS Employee Health. Volunteers are required to provide proof of immunity by immunization record or by titer(s) - blood tests for Measles, Mumps, Rubella and Varicella (chicken-pox). Additionally volunteers are required to show documentation of a tuberculosis skin test (TST) performed elsewhere within the past 12 months and 1 within the past 3 months. AHS Employee Health can provide the second TB test for free.

Step 6: Background Investigation

Volunteers are required to go through a criminal background screening after the Health Screening is completed.
