PLACEMENT PURPOSE
Support your community by helping it prepare for, and respond to, large disasters. Volunteers work to establish and maintain partnerships with other organizations in the community (ie shelter sites, meal sources). They also respond to local disasters (ie fire, flood, tornado) when activated by setting up and operating disaster shelters, serving hot meals, snacks & drinks, or distributing supplies to those affected by the disaster. Candidates for this position must have availability to respond at a variety of hours with their own transportation, good written and verbal communication skills, and be comfortable working in stressful situations while handling multiple tasks and assessing incoming information quickly. Candidates must be physically able to lift & carry 25 pounds.

OPEN TIME DAYS

3-6 hours per month for preparedness tasks.

8-12 hour (average) shifts per disaster response.

Number of responses vary per month.

REQUIRED TRAINING
Orientation to the American Red Cross Online & Classroom training course list will be provided (approx. 15 hrs of training). One-on-one mentoring and support from current Disaster Sheltering or Feeding volunteers.
