ORGANIZATION: Second Harvest Heartland

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.
  • 5 people are interested

What to wear:

This distribution takes place outside, so please dress for the weather and the task by wearing closed-toe shoes and sunscreen for sun protection

Description:

Love being outside and getting fresh food to our hungry neighbors? Spend time with Second Harvest Heartland at one of our fresh food distributions. This is a great opportunity for individuals and small groups to serve in a fun and energetic environment.

Volunteer Tasks:

Volunteers will participate in setting up the distribution, sort food, greet clients as they arrive, and hand the food to clients. Some volunteer may be asked to assist in minimal client tracking. Instructions and training will be provided on site. This opportunity is very physical and requires volunteers to be able to stand for three hour and be able lift 10-20 pounds.

How we source the food:

Fresh produce distributed at this event comes from two programs: 1. Some food will come from Second Harvest Heartland's Food Rescue program, which collects donated produce, dairy, deli, meat bakery and grocery items from more than 275 retail grocers in our 59 county service area. 2. The bulk produce comes from local growers who donate a portion of their harvest.

Youth:

We invite children 13 and older to participate in this event accompanied by an adult. Waivers are required for all youth participating.

About Second Harvest Heartland

Mission Statement

The mission of Second Harvest Heartland is to end hunger through community partnerships. At Second Harvest Heartland, our volunteer partners do more than enrich our work, they ground us to our mission of ending hunger together. We integrate volunteers into all aspects of creating and delivering solutions that will free our neighbors of hunger.

Description

More than a food bank, Second Harvest Heartland is a leading partner in the policies and programs that work to end hunger, like SNAP, school meals and senior nutrition programs, and we’re an innovator in the areas where food can be the solution, like FOODRx and Minnesota Central Kitchen.

Second Harvest Heartland is a member of Feeding America, a national network of more than 200 food banks serving every state in the United States. Membership means access to millions of pounds of surplus food and grocery donations from manufacturers and producers throughout the country.

Working with our network of partners, volunteers and donors as well as people like you, our 90,000+ square feet of dry, refrigerator and freezer space is constantly accepting and distributing donations. Our fleet of trucks travels nearly half a million miles a year, picking up food donations and delivering them to local food shelves, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, senior community centers and children's after school programs. Each year we distributed more than 100 million meals to our partners in hunger-relief. Learn more at 2harvest.org.
