Now more than ever we need to reach out to our seniors sheltering in place during Covid-19. All of our services and trainings are rendered via phone or Zoom.
Volunteers receive training in counseling, problem-solving, motivational interviewing, how to make referrals to community resources in Lake County, dealing with loss and grief, cultural humility, and many other skills. Peer counselors also draw upon a wealth of life experience as they counsel and help other seniors.
After graduating from the training, the Senior Peer Counselor is assigned a client. Weekly supervision and training are provided. Counselors travel to the clients home and are reimbursed for mileage expenses.
Senior Peer Counselors benefit not only by giving back and helping others, they also experience self-growth in terms of their own aging journey. Their lives are enriched by the camaraderie and support from fellow Counselors, and also from the stimulation of working with and helping clients live more meaningful and healthy lives.
