The Portland Japanese Garden is seeking a Volunteer Librarian. Library volunteers actively support the Garden’s mission to maintain, develop, and share audio and visual resources about Japanese garden practices, culture, and aesthetics with the public.
Key Responsibilities:
- Welcome Garden members and volunteers to the Vollum Library.
- Verify that guests check in and out.
- Answer questions.
- Familiarize oneself with the organization.
- Query the online catalog called Tinycat.
- Maintain Garden etiquette in the Vollum Library (ie: no food, drink, cell phones).
- Assist the Librarian with general tasks like labeling books and contributing to the maintenance of the Library.
Other Responsibilities:
- Lift light loads of 10lbs or less.
- Maintain excellent customer service.
- Adhere to Garden dress code and wear volunteer happi coat.
Training: Initial training and ongoing support will be provided by our staff librarian and volunteer department.
Commitment: Volunteer shifts in the Library are available on Saturdays during the Library’s open hours of 10am to 2pm. The Garden would like to find a volunteer who can commit to volunteering 1 shift per month for a period no shorter than 6 months.
Skills and Qualifications:
- No experience necessary.
- Native Japanese speaker preferred.
- Positive, cooperative, team-oriented attitude.
- Knowledge of Japanese history, culture, art, or aesthetics a plus, but not necessary.
- Must be 15 years old or older.

- Annual complimentary Washington Park volunteer parking pas to be used with volunteering. Awarded after 15 hours of service each year.
