CSFS volunteer

The extensive damage in riparian areas due to the flooding that occurred in September of 2013 has compromised are ecosystem along many waterways on the Front Range, come help make a difference! The Seedling Tree Nursery Manager has requested some much needed help with some production work of planting and repotting of seedlings at the CSFS Nursery in Fort Collins. The seedlings will be used for flood mitigation restoration work. No experience is necessary. Youth under 18 welcome accompanied by an adult.

* Times: Approximately 8 to 3 (Partial shifts accepted).

Mission Statement

The volunteer program seeks to achieve stewardship of Colorado’s diverse forest environments through forestry outreach and service. We provide stewardship opportunities in rural and urban settings to mitigate the damaging effects of wildfire, insects, disease, wind, water and people. Additionally, volunteer opportunities convey how the Colorado State Forest Service (CSFS) serves Colorado citizens and facilitates responsible land management. Volunteer projects help the CSFS meet its mission and include important educational components.

Description

Potential Project Work Days Include:

  • Cutting trees to mitigate hazards and improve forest health
  • Seedling Tree Nursery Assistance
  • Urban forestry
  • Tree planting
  • General landowner and community assistance
  • Reducing wildfire threats in a forest
  • Education and public awareness
  • Planting trees along a windbreak
  • Managing exotic weeds

Volunteers are Encouraged to Participate in Formal Training Events, Including:

  • Equipment safety and use/chipper training
  • CSFS seedling tree nursery
  • Insect and disease identification
  • Urban and community forestry
  • Environmental education with youth
  • Professionalism in natural resources management

Participation levels differ, depending on volunteers’ availability and interests

  • Volunteer throughout the state
  • Volunteer for long-term, short-term or one-time events
  • Volunteer as a group or class

CSFS Volunteers are a critical aspect of our mission and serve as agency representatives to our customers. We expect that every volunteer will act professionally, treat others respectfully, practice safety first and have a genuine interest to learn about forestry and natural resources.
