No man is an island. Truer words were never spoken when considering the role of the Relay For Life Event chair. The key to your success lies in recruiting, organizing, and motivating a committee of volunteers as they recruit teams, obtain sponsorships, and plan your Relay For Life.

Relay participants learn about cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment, and how to get the support needed if they are already living with cancer. Relay For Life also celebrates Survivors who have bravely fought and won their battle against the disease while remembering those who lost the fight.

You are a cheerleader, coach, and confidante. Your committee counts on you to keep things running smoothly and leading them to have a successful event. You put out fires, rally the troops, and make sure the job gets done in planning, implementing, and evaluating the best Relay For Life ever seen in your community.

Successful Relay leaders learn early to delegate. This is important since Relay is a community event. Throughout the event-planning process, your American Cancer Society Staff Partner will serve as a coach and will provide you with all the needed resources.

An Event chair’s main role is to provide direction and leadership in order to attain goals while representing Relay For Life in the community.
