Many survivors of domestic violence experience economic abuse, that could be somebody else controlling their money, taking their paychecks, stalking or harassing them at their jobs or getting them in trouble with their boss; and it is one of the primary reasons a survivor of domestic violence stays in an abusive relationship. Additionally, the majority of survivors we support do not have access to their family finances and depend on their partners for financial support. They may not have access to a checking or savings account or a credit card. Many survivors often come to the Refugio (shelter) with very few of their possessions. When residents leave the Refugio and move into a new home, therefore, they are often starting from scratch. We attempt to provide a Move-In kit for every resident that leaves our shelter so they have a smoother start in creating their new home. Here is a list of supplies that can be collected and assembled into Move-In kits for survivors and their children leaving our shelter:

  • Laundry baskets
  • Laundry detergent
  • Clothes hangers (no wire please)*
  • Dish soap and sponges
  • Bathroom and kitchen cleaning supplies
  • Paper towels
  • Toilet paper and facial tissues
  • Large pots and pans*
  • Cooking utensils*
  • Silverware*
  • Dishes and glassware*
  • Coffee mugs*
  • Large storage containers with locking lids (for moving and storage)*
  • Bed linens, blankets, and comforters*
  • Grocery, Gas, and shopping giftcards

*indicates that gently used items are accepted.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to mobilize Latinas and Latino communities to end domestic violence.

Description

Casa de Esperanza's roots are deep in Latino communities. Founded more than twenty years ago, our organization has developed and strengthened since its establishment as a shelter for battered Latinas. We have matured and transformed because of a brave, innovative spirit and responsiveness to Latinas. Today we are a Latina agency that is grounded in commitment to our communities and to ending domestic violence. The organization has grown to become the largest Latina organization in the country focused on domestic violence. Casa de Esperanza is also committed to becoming a greater resource to organizations and communities in the areas of sexual assault and trafficking.

Casa de Esperanza’s leadership in the field has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which has designated the organization as the Culturally Specific Issue Resource Center on Domestic Violence and Latin@ Communities.

Casa de Esperanza has expanded to offer critical, innovative services and support, ranging from family advocacy, and shelter services to leadership development and community engagement opportunities for Latin@ youth, women and men. Throughout all of our prevention and intervention initiatives we place community at the center, thus we incorporate intentional community listening and engagement strategies to ensure we are guided by our communities.
