Mission Statement
Founded in 1997, the mission of Boost! is to empower West Oakland youth with the skills and confidence needed to become positive contributors to society. Boost! fosters healthy attitudes toward learning and strengthens students' academic performance and self-esteem through individualized One-on-One Tutoring and Mentoring, Field trips, and Family Events. Be part of a program that is fun and fulfilling and where the kids WANT to be.
Description
Boost! West Oakland's innovative programs provide individualized, one-on-one support to each of its participants. The activities are consistent, well-organized, and offer continuous support over a long period of time. Students attend Boost! a minimum of once a week for an entire school year, and many students participate for five or six consecutive years. Each child in Boost! has the dedicated support of a tutor/mentor whose role is to provide academic and social-emotional support for the student by listening to and addressing the student's unique needs and talents. For many of the children this is the only time that they have such a high level of dedicated, positive attention from an adult, and the effect can be life-changing. Boost! participants routinely surpass their peers in language, math, and self-esteem assessments.
