VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services seeks volunteers for upcoming Alive & Running 5K Walk/Run for Suicide Prevention

You can support people who have attempted or lost someone to suicide and help save lives by becoming a volunteer at Didi Hirsch’s 19 th Annual Alive & Running 5K Walk/Run for Suicide Preventionin Los Angeles on Sunday, September 24, 2017.The event raises money and awareness for our Suicide Prevention Center-the nation’s first and a leader in training, research, crisis care and counseling.

A member of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, our Crisis Line is one of two in the nation with Spanish-speaking counselors 24/7 and the only one in California that answers calls for the entire state. Along with two other centers in the U.S., it supports traumatized communities as part of the national Disaster Distress Helpline. It trains more than 8,000 people a year, many of them first responders such as FBI agents and law enforcement. It also participates in cutting-edge research, including the development and evaluation of support groups replicated around the world for people who have attempted or lost someone to suicide.

In 2016, Alive & Running drew more than 2,300 runners, walkers, and volunteers. We expect another record-breaking event this year. Proceeds pay the salaries of Crisis Chat counselors, cover the costs of our trainings, send staffers to the scene of a suicide to provide immediate support and fund follow-up programs for high-risk callers and individuals recently hospitalized for an attempt.

Mission Statement

Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services transforms lives by providing quality mental health and substance abuse services in communities where stigma or poverty limit access.

Description

Didi Hirsch Mental Health Center is a private 501(c)(3) non-profit organization this year celebrating 70 years of experience providing mental health and substance abuse services in Los Angeles and Orange Counties. A leader in community mental health care, this year over 70,000 people will turn to us for assistance with serious mental health issues. At eleven sites, Didi Hirsch's services range from suicide prevention, crisis intervention, child abuse prevention, and subtstance abuse counseling to a myriad of other services for children, adults, families and older adults. And we share what we have learned: the training of professionals in psychology and other related disciplines has been an integral part of our core values since Didi Hirsch's inception.

Founded in 1958, the Suicide Prevention Center, a program of Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services, created the first 24-hour suicide prevention crisis line in the nation. Last year, we added a 24-hour Spanish-language line. In addition to the crisis line, which answers more than 50,000 calls each year, our Suicide Prevention Center offers support for those who have lost a loved one to suicide. Our outreach efforts are educating our community and the public as well as many professional groups, businesses, and schools about suicide prevention and the devastating impact of suicide.
