Volunteers/Interns begin with core responsibilities of greeting visitors, taking admissions, and processing sales in the museum shop while providing excellent customer service to the museum’s constituents. As volunteers continue to expand their experience at the museum they will be assigned additional tasks to support staff including: data entry and mail merge projects, filing documents, proofing written materials, processing mailings, prepping craft supplies, and other office tasks as assigned. Based on interest and experience and museum priorities, volunteers may also branch into specific areas of exhibit research, development & installation; building improvements; marketing including graphic design, distribution, website updates, and social media; docent led-tours; development and research of craft projects; and event and fundraising support.

Mission Statement
The Mitchell Museum's mission is to promote and share a deeper understanding of Native American Indian peoples through the collection, preservation and interpretation of traditional and contemporary art and material culture.
Description
The Mitchell Museum of the American Indian is the only museum in the Chicago-area that focuses exclusively on the history, culture and arts of the Native people of North America. Its general purpose is to promote and share a deeper understanding of Native American peoples through the collection, preservation and interpretation of their traditional and contemporary art and material culture. Its mission also includes promoting public understanding of cultural diversity through first voice perspectives. The Museum’s collection includes archaeological, ethnographic and art objects of North American Indian and Inuit (Eskimo) people from all time periods, from the Paleo-Indian period through the present day. The Museum serves as a resource for the Evanston and surrounding communities, for the greater Chicago area and its schools, for Native peoples, and for researchers from other educational and cultural institutions. The Museum is dedicated to working collaboratively with each of these constituencies in all of its activities including collections care, exhibitions, guided tours, lectures, demonstrations, workshops, loan programs and docent training.
