Volunteer with GRID Alternatives and Change the World! Community Outreach Internship with Solar Non-Profit in Washington, DC We have an exciting summer opportunity for an eager intern to gain experience in the growing field of solar energy. Work with our outreach department July through August to engage homeowners in energy education and efficiency while helping them save money each month on their utility bills. Our outreach team will mentor and expose you to all aspects of the GRID Alternatives mission. GRID Alternatives is a non-profit organization that provides energy efficiency and renewable energy services to low-income families.

Our core program is the Solar Affordable Housing Program, where we train and lead community volunteers and job trainees from all walks of life to install solar electric systems with low-income homeowners. GRID Alternatives Mid-Atlantic is offering an unpaid Outreach Internship for three months to assist with communications, community outreach, client relations, and administrative tasks with the Mid-Atlantic team.

Activities for this internship will include, but are not limited to:

-Learning about Solar Advantage Plus program and being able to answer questions about solar application process and solar technology

-Canvassing in target neighborhoods in DC to invite people to learn about solar

-Making phone calls to invite people to learn about solar

-Tracking outreach efforts in Salesforce

-Attending community events and tabling to provide information and resources to community members

-Ensuring outreach team has all paperwork and fliers needed for outreach efforts

-Calling local businesses and asking for donation requests for Solar Ambassador program

Minimum Qualifications include:

1. 2 month summer commitment to work 6-18 hours per week

2.Capacity to establish positive relationships with youth, community members, and community partners

3.Comfort and experience interacting with, instructing and speaking with diverse communities of all ages

4.Self-starter and ability to work independently as well as in a team

5.Superior professional verbal and written communications skills

6.Strong skills and experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher and PowerPoint

7.Strong organizational, multi-tasking, and decision-making skills

8.Willingness to work some evenings

9.Valid Driver’s license and clean driving record

10.Reimbursement for some required travel

11.Available to intern July through August **exact start and end dates are negotiable**

Preferred skills and qualifications:

1.Outreach and social marketing experience

2.Desire for a career in environmental education and outreach

3.Foundational knowledge of renewable energy

4.Interest in and enthusiasm for renewable energy, community development, green jobs and/or helping families and communities in need

5.Experience with data entry, graphic design and marketing material development

6.Bilingual and bilingual in two languages are strongly encouraged. Spanish and English

This is an unpaid internship with GRID Alternatives in exchange for a good reference, corporate and nonprofit networking opportunities, authentic work experience, and the opportunity to work with professional staff. This internship position is crucial to the success of the Mid-Atlantic’s outreach department’s strategy and to GRID Alternatives mission. Office Location Office is located in Washington, DC. Most of the work will be in the office though a portion of the work for this position will be conducted at client’s homes throughout the Washington, DC and Baltimore, MD. Travel and Work Schedule

This position may require work on weekends as well as travel throughout Washington, DC and Baltimore. GRID Alternatives provides travel reimbursement, though applicant must hold a valid driver license and possess a reliable vehicle.

Compensation: This is an unpaid internship. Benefits include real world, professional experience, references, and networking.
