The Organization:
PeaceGeeks is a Vancouver-based non-profit organization that operates around the globe through the use of technology to build the technological, communications and management capacities of grassroots organizations who work to promote peace, accountability and human rights. We develop partnerships with these organizations to provide meaningful support designed to increase their skills, effectiveness and impact. We see a world where everyone can leverage technology to make peace and human rights a lived reality. On March 2017, PeaceGeeks won the renowned Google Impact Challenge, allowing them to have the necessary funding to launch an app that will make it easier for newcomers to access immigrant and refugee services in Vancouver, where they account for 40% of the population.

Position Overview:
Working in the financial reporting team, the Financial Reporting Accountant will work alongside the Accountant and Procurement Specialist to ensure the timely delivery of the financial statements and requisite tax filings. The Financial Reporting Accountant will report directly to the Finance Committee Chair, as well as to the Executive Director.

Responsibilities

  • Input of PeaceGeeks’ financial transactions into the general ledger of PeaceGeeks Society (hosted on QuickBooks) and PeaceGeeks International Society (prepared using Excel)
  • Preparation of the first draft of the quarterly financial statements and work alongside the Finance Team Lead and Treasurer to resolve any issues prior to finalization
  • Preparation of the charity tax return, not-for-profit tax return, and GST return
  • Coordinate with the Executive Director and other PeaceGeeks team members as necessary to discuss any issues of financial significance in preparing the financial reports
  • Remain informed as necessary on transactional issues with vendors, donors, and granting bodies, including review of vendor invoices, grant agreements, and other relevant supporting documentation
  • Summarize receivables by maintaining invoice accounts, coordinating monthly transfer to AR account, verifying totals, and preparing aging reports.

Qualifications

  • Obtained or working towards a Canadian accounting designation
  • 3+ years of work experience as an accountant
  • Familiar with Not-for-Profit accounting standards
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct accounting or tax research as necessary
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Google Suite, and QuickBooks
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to take work effectively on a team
  • Ability to handle confidential information and maintain a high degree of ethics
  • Ability to commit to 15-20 hours per fiscal quarter, and able to visit PeaceGeeks’ HQ on a bi-weekly basis to meet with the Executive Director
