Celebrate National Public Lands Day with Sam’s Point Area! We will have two projects geared towards different skill levels so that everyone can participate. Spend the day outdoors giving back by picking up trash or pulling invasive species to show appreciation for our public lands. Please bring water, snacks and a lunch, and sturdy hiking shoes. Volunteers interested in either project should contact Sam’s Point at 845-647-7989 to pre-register. Both projects will meet at 10:00 a.m. and will work until 1:00 p.m., but they will meet at different areas of the park. All National Public Lands Day volunteers will receive a free day pass to participating federal public lands.
Trash Pickup Project 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.:
Do you often see water bottles, candy wrappers, or other litter when you walk the trails at Sam’s Point? We need your help to change that! Meet at the Sam’s Point Visitor Center at 10 a.m. where you will be given garbage bags and gloves before ranging the park for litter. This event is recommended for ages 8 and up, all children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 18.
Barberry Pull Project 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.:
Japanese barberry is a prickly invasive species that is quickly spreading in forests and fields around the country. Help Sam’s Point control its spread on National Public Lands Day. Interested volunteers will meet at Mt. Meenagha Rd (GPS address 172 Mt. Meenagha Road or GPS point 41.689097 N, -74.371475 W) at 10:00 a.m. where they will be met by park staff. We will work on pulling barberry in this area until 1:00 p.m. Removing barberry involves some strenuous pulling. It is highly recommended to wear long sleeves and long pants and to treat your work clothes with bug spray or permethrin. This event is recommended for ages 16 and up, all children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 18.
