Japanese barberry is a prickly invasive species that is quickly spreading in forests and fields around the country. You have probably encountered it in your yard, along the road, or while hiking. Learn more about it and help Sam’s Point control its spread at this event celebrating NYS Invasive Species Awareness Week. Interested volunteers will meet at Mt. Meenagha Rd (GPS address 172 Mt. Meenagha Road or GPS point 41.689097 N, -74.371475 W) at 10:00 a.m. where they will be met by park staff. We will work on pulling barberry in this area until 1:00 p.m. Removing barberry involves some strenuous pulling. It is highly recommended to wear long sleeves and long pants and to pre-treat your work clothes with bug spray or permethrin. This event is recommended for ages 16 and up, all children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 18. Pre-registration is required for this event. Carpooling is recommended.
This event is held in conjunction with the Invasive Species Lecture on July 10 at the Gardiner Library. Call the Sam's Point Visitor Center for more information. (845)647-7989.
