StreamWatch
StreamWatch is a new citizen science program at the Mohonk Preserve which will be launching in the summer of 2017. Citizen scientists will collect conservation-based water quality data within the Kleine Kill and Coxing Kill watersheds. These watersheds are located on the Shawangunk Ridge and drain into the Hudson River via the Wallkill River and Rondout Creek. Volunteer citizen scientists will be trained in specific data collection and naturalist observation protocols and will conduct regular monitoring in these two watershed areas. Data will be input into a variety of research databases and will be used to help the Conservation Science department develop a conservation plan for the Kleine Kill and Coxing Kill watersheds. Data collection will evaluate water quality, identify vulnerable or invasive species, determine the need for riparian buffers and changes to current agricultural practices, and inform future Mohonk Preserve projects.
Volunteer Requirements:
- Attend group orientation and individual site orientation
- Desire and ability to hike to stream sampling locations with required equipment
- Collect and enter data at least 1-2x/month
