Gardening Volunteer - The FARM Institute

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: The Trustees of Reservations

Opportunity Overview

The FARM Institute is located on the historic Katama Farm, a farm that dates to the early 1900s. With their help, the Edgartown Conservation Commission became the landlord of Katama Farm, conserving its history and future as a working farm. Currently the farm could use the helpful hands of several gardening assistants. The farm has a large teaching garden, The Friendship Garden, as well as a greenhouse and several perennial beds. If your passion is gardening, and you have a few hours a week to spare, we would enjoy sharing this amazing property with you! We are looking for creative and dedicated individuals who have a flexible schedule, enjoy working outdoors, and have a basic knowledge of garden skills. Our staff will work with the volunteers to determine gardening tasks and priorities. Ideal candidates should be equally at home working both independently as well as on a team.

Please Note: A background check is required for this role.

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Working with staff to assess gardening needs
  • Weeding, watering, planting and transplanting in the vegetable beds
  • Mulching and maintaining the herb garden and perennial beds
  • Seeding and transplanting in the greenhouse if necessary
  • Maintain open communication with staff
  • Log volunteer hours weekly

Qualifications:

  • An eagerness to participate in maintaining The FARM Institute's gardens
  • Ability to use hand tools
  • Ability to follow instructions, work on a team, and work in a busy setting
  • Dress in appropriate clothes and footwear
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time and ability to bend
  • Ability to walk on a variety of surfaces including grass or uneven surfaces
  • Minimum age: 18; under 18 will require parental/adult supervision

Mission Statement

The Trustees of Reservations is here to protect and share the Massachusetts places people love for their exceptional scenic, historic, and ecological value. For their trails, their history, their gardens, their beaches. For the simple reason that nature and culture can soothe the soul and improve our lives.

Description

Who We Are

We are more than 100,000 people like you who love the outdoors, who love the distinctive charms of New England, and who believe in celebrating and protecting them, for everyone, forever.

Together with our neighbors, we protect the distinct character of our communities and inspire a commitment to our special places. Our passion is to share with everyone the irreplaceable natural and cultural treasures we care for.

What We Do

We enjoy and care for more than 100 special places - nearly 25,000 acres - all around Massachusetts. And we are actively building an extended family of friends and neighbors across the state that can help in their different ways.

What We Are Up Against

Through more than 100 years of hard work and high standards, The Trustees have built a sterling reputation and a stunning physical legacy.

Today, the places we care about are going fast, and the forces undermining them, including climate change, are moving faster. We need to tap the wellspring of people’s joy - in their communities, their heritage, and the natural world - and mobilize a whole new generation to care.
