Description
The farm story..... For 135 years the Strong Family Farm has stood as a sentinel in the center of Vernon. Once comprising more than 50 acres on West Road and Hartford Turnpike, the farm has served as the home and workplace for more than seven generations of Strongs. Built in 1878 using his own skills and his wife's dowry, Nathan Morgan Strong purchased orchard lands and built the 7-bedroom homestead that still stands today. Over the years, all kinds of fruits and vegetables were grown, hay was harvested and herds of Holstein cows were bred and milked. For 50 years, the people of Vernon spent each fall watching hundreds of tiny poults grow into ample, adult turkeys that would eventually grace dinner tables all over town. Now the last of the Strongs has moved away and it’s up to good community volunteers to save it for future generations. Since the idea of the Strong Family Farm Inc. was conceived as a community farm, volunteers have administered and worked in many ways to preserve the 6 acre farm and open it up to volunteers to learn and work together in many aspects. Volunteers have attended and run many work days, garden days, chicken classes, Harvest Festival and a Chicken Run welcoming the chickens back to the farm. There are all types of learning opportunities and so many needs for volunteers!
