teensReach

teensReach is the awesome young adult volunteer group and youth council for the San Jose Public Library. Participating in teensReach is a good way for you to serve the public and to fulfill volunteering hours for school or another group. At the same time, you will develop work skills and experience, meet new friends and also help make your library a better place for teens and the wider community.

Some of the responsive activities teensReach members have been involved in include: children's craft and games programs, hosting and organizing teen programs at the library, volunteering at our Summer Reading registration table, hosting teen book sales for which all of the funds support additional teen programs, providing book/magazine/movie/game reviews and suggestions, creating interactive and attractive digital and print displays in our teen room, and representing San Jose Public Library at community events.

Membership requires regular attendance at monthly meetings on the 1st Saturday of the month at 1pm (we feed you pizza!), participation in and support of at least 1 monthly library activity/event, and a sense of fun and adventure.

Qualifications:

  • Must be between 13-18 years old
  • Must commit to volunteering for at least 5 months
  • Have a strong interest in the library or serving their community

Mission Statement

San Jose Public Library enriches lives by fostering lifelong learning and by ensuring that every member of the community has access to a vast array of ideas and information. San Jose Public Library is a winner of the 2011 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the nation’s highest honor for museums and libraries. Recipients are selected because of their innovative approaches to public service and the contribution they make to the educational, civic, cultural and economic development goals of their communities.

Description

Hillview Branch Library is located in East San Jose, near the Story and King intersection. We are located right next door to Fischer Middle School and have a rambunctous, lively crew of students who frequent the library. We serve a diverse, vibrant community of all ages, many of whom are native Spanish and Vietnamese speakers. Some of our popular activities include our storytimes, ESL Conversation Club, citizenship programs, and special holiday celebrations like our Halloween party and Posadas with Santa. We have a computer area for teens, children and adults and a mixed-age area; we also have 20 laptops that the public can check out and which we also use for programs. The library has two study rooms that the public can reserve and a beautiful community room with a projector and built-in sound system that is available to rent for free, open community activities. In addition, our library features a classroom space in our Family Learning Center and a separate office for virtual programs.

Public libraries in California seek to engage the talents, skills and commitment of volunteers to serve the communities’ information and literacy needs. Libraries offer a variety of skilled volunteer opportunities to make a meaningful contribution to library programs, operations, fundraising events and other community engagement functions. Skilled volunteers have opportunities to lead projects, work with teams of staff and volunteers, learn new skills, and have fun.
