Tribal Resilience VISTA at Ohkay Owingeh Housing Authority

Enterprise is a national nonprofit dedicated to creating opportunity for low-and moderate-income people through affordable housing in diverse, thriving communities. Enterprise’s Rural and Native American Initiative (RNAI) works with tribal and community partners to create healthy, safe, green affordable housing and to increase opportunities for economic advancement for individuals and families. The RNAI is implementing a Cultural and Climate Resiliency AmeriCorps*VISTA Program to build the capacity of tribal partners to mitigate climate impacts on housing in a culturally responsive manner. The Ohkay Owingeh Housing Authority (OOHA) is located in Ohkay Owingeh, New Mexico. OOHA was established in 1997 as the Tribally Designated Housing Entity (TDHE) by the Ohkay Owingeh Tribal Council, in order to provide tribal members with safe, decent and affordable housing within the reservation. OOHA’s primary focus is to meet the high demand for affordable housing through new multifamily developments that take into consideration the importance of our Tribal culture and traditions. OOHA also meets the rehabilitation needs of existing substandard homes on the reservation through ongoing renovation projects. An AmeriCorps*VISTA will be placed with OOHA to enhance and improve the homeownership program and assist in fundraising for the Owe’neh Bupingeh Rehabilitation Project. The AmeriCorps*VISTAs will have the opportunity to attend the Disaster Resilience Academy in Washington D.C. to learn about federal tools and resources, such as those available through the U.S. Climate Resilience Toolkit, to assess risk and counter the effects of extreme weather events and other climate-related impacts on communities and vulnerable populations, including low-income residents.

Member Duties : The AmeriCorps*VISTA will enhance and improve the homeownership program by developing and improving the prequalification processes to qualify families for mortgage financing, working closely with mortgage lenders to outline their loan processes to educate the community, and redevelop and implement the marketing plan for the program. The AmeriCorps*VISTA will also assist in fundraising for the Owe’neh Bupingeh Rehabilitation Project through research and writing grants.
