Tribal Resilience VISTA at Akwesasne Housing Authority (AHA)

Enterprise is a national nonprofit dedicated to creating opportunity for low-and moderate-income people through affordable housing in diverse, thriving communities. Enterprise’s Rural and Native American Initiative (RNAI) works with tribal and community partners to create healthy, safe, green affordable housing and to increase opportunities for economic advancement for individuals and families. The RNAI is implementing a Cultural and Climate Resiliency AmeriCorps*VISTA Program to build the capacity of tribal partners to mitigate climate impacts on housing in a culturally responsive manner. Three AmeriCorps*VISTAs will be placed with the Akwesasne Housing Authority (AHA) that serves the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe located in Akwesasne, NY. The AHA operates several programs for the benefit of low-income tribal members and their families. AHA provides home ownership and rental opportunities as well as assistance with counseling and training relevant to housing programs benefiting eligible families. The AmeriCorps*VISTAs will work along with the Master Planning Team at the AHA for the design of the new development, "Akwesasne Homes" neighborhood, to focus on culturally relevant design of the homes and layout of the parcels in order to be prepared for disasters, storms, floods. They will also work with the AHA and the Tribe to identify homes needing energy efficiency upgrades and healthy home needs in the community. The AmeriCorps*VISTAs will have the opportunity to attend the Disaster Resilience Academy in Washington D.C. to learn about federal tools and resources, such as those available through the U.S. Climate Resilience Toolkit, to assess risk and counter the effects of extreme weather events and other climate-related impacts on communities and vulnerable populations, including low-income residents.

Member Duties : The AmeriCorps*VISTAs will work along with the Master Planning Team at the AHA for the design of the new development, "Akwesasne Homes" neighborhood, to focus on culturally relevant design of the homes and layout of the parcels in order to be prepared for disasters, storms, floods. They will also work with the AHA and the Tribe to identify homes needing energy efficiency upgrades and healthy home needs in the community. Specific activities the AmeriCorps*VISTAs will undertake include assessment of homes for possible moisture infiltration, strategize and communicate short and long term mold prevention measures, assess homes for indoor air quality improvements, develop educational components on health homes, research grant funding opportunities, and work with the MPT and AHA to design culturally responsive, resilient, affordable homes.
