About Beaver Hangouts

Location:

Mission Statement

Provide all students with an equal opportunity for college access and readiness through the use of technology.

Description

Beaver Hangouts strives to provide underserved youth in Oregon, particularly students of color, rural communities, and potentially first generation college students, the information needed to successfully pursue post-secondary education through the use of videochat software. We accomplish this during bi-monthly coaching sessions, led by OSU student volunteers, with K-12 and community college classes, afterschool programs, and non-profit organizations. Topics covered include the day in the life of a college student, differences between community college and universities, career goals and interests, time management and goal setting skills, the first year experience, ways to pay for college, a college application guide, campus resources and support, reading a financial aid award letter, etc. OSU students are encouraged to use their personal experiences and knowledge to disseminate the information and create a personal connection with the youth. This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience interacting with, and educating youth.
