Mission Statement

The mission of the Adult Literacy Project at Waubonsee Community College is to empower adults to be responsible citizens through improved literacy skills.

Description

The Adult Literacy Project at Waubonsee Community College began in 1985.

Trained volunteers provide customized English language tutoring in both reading and writing to adults who want to improve their skills or learn English as a second language. Volunteers may work one-on-one with a student, tutor as a volunteer aide in a Waubonsee Adult Education classroom, assist in the Adult Education Learning Center or volunteer in the open classroom.

Volunteer tutors receive 16 hours of professional training and all of the materials they need to teach adults to read, write and/or speak the English language. The training is usually 2 Saturdays (both days required). The free training sessions are offered several times a year. The project also has an online training that is self paced. The Adult Literacy Project is an affiliate of ProLiteracy Worldwide.

Volunteer tutors must be high school graduates who enjoy the English language, have patience and a positive mental attituade. Tutor qualifications also include dependability and a willingness to learn and accept cultural differences.

The students are all adults ranging in age from 16 to 80 who hold many different jobs and have various ethnic backgrounds. All the students served by the Adult Literacy project need assistance in reading, writing, and/or speaking the English language. Many ae native English speakers but some are learning English as their second language.
