The Newseum’s Education Department is looking for enthusiastic, flexible and professional weekday and weekend volunteer guides, who are also passionate about free expression and the First Amendment.
Our guides do the following:
- Conduct walking tours for visitors of the museum covering most exhibits and all floors
- Effectively and accurately communicate information about our collection and our mission to an audience of varying ages and experiences
- Facilitate the activity cart and engage visitors in object-based activities
REQUIREMENTS:
- Can commit to a minimum of one year to the Newseum
- Must complete a training program to prepare them for their role at the Newseum
- Is at least 16 years old at the time of application
- Can complete all required training as scheduled
- Is able to work independently or in groups
- Has a valid email address, internet access and basic computer skills
- Can successfully complete a background check if 18 years old or older. This is not required of volunteers under the age of 18.
- Is a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or has unrestricted work authorization
- Understands volunteer duties may change depending on the needs of the museum
SKILLS:
- Excellent verbal communication
- Broad knowledge of, and an interest in, U.S. and world history, journalism and current events
- Prior teaching or guide experience is a plus but not required
SCHEDULE:
We have spots open:
- For weekday guides, who volunteer one four-hour shift each week
- Limited availability
- For weekend guides, who volunteer one four-hour shift every other weekend
- Saturdays and Sunday mornings available
- For floaters, who volunteer at least one four-hour shift four times a month on various days to help with schedule coverage

Description
Newseum volunteers provide both Orientation and Three-Point tours to our visitors. Three-Point tours are 10- to 20-minute tours in a single gallery that link together three artifacts, objects or images sharing a common theme. Orientation tours are 60-minute building tours designed to provide visitors with navigation information as well as a brief overview of the exhibits.
