The Arc of the Capital Area works with people with intellectual and developmental dissabilities to help them lead more fulfilling lives. With this in mind, we've partnered with Dr Kim Davis of RunLab, to offer people with special needs an opportunity to build physical skills and increased health and wellness through training for distance races. We are in need of volunteers to help motivate and encourage individuals with special needs while they train for an upcoming race event. Volunteers will participate in the workout, as directed by a Runlab employee.
RunLab works with runners of all varieties on injuries, running biochemics, and shoe recommendations. They've also worked with many special needs runners on their mechanics, running technique, and stability, in addition to range of motion work through massage.
A typical workout consists of a thorough warm up, a 1 mile run (at different paces depending on the speed and ability of individual runners), light strength training, and a cool down lap.
Each workout begins Saturday at 9am, and lasts no more than an hour. The site rotates between Austin High School Track and RunLab at 410 Pressler (off of 5th).
