Illinois JusticeCorps

Illinois JusticeCorps is an innovative program that trains undergraduates to work in courthouses throughout the state of Illinois. The goal of the program is to make the courthouses more accessible to people who cannot afford to hire attorneys to represent them. Illinois JusticeCorps fellows provide navigational guidance, legal and procedural information, resource referrals, and one-on-one assistance to self-represented court patrons. Fellows also lead a team of 5-20 part-time volunteers by providing training, mentoring, and leadership to those individuals. In additions, fellows get to work alongside legal aid attorneys as well as judges invested in broadening access to justice for all court patrons, not just those who can afford to hire an attorney. Thus, the program provides an extremely rare and unique opportunity for individuals without advanced professional training to make an impact on the legal system throughout the state of Illinois.

Mission Statement

Illinois JusticeCorps is an innovative program through which students serve as guides to make courts across Illinois more welcoming and less intimidating for people without lawyers.

Description

Illinois JusticeCorps is an innovative program that enhances access to justice for the growing number of unrepresented people in the courts by empowering and training student volunteers to help people without lawyers navigate the court system by providing legal information and procedural guidance.

People coming to court without lawyers often do not know where to go, what to ask for or who to see for documents. They often are confused, intimidated and scared. JusticeCorps members serve as guides to make the courts more welcoming and less intimidating to people who are navigating this complex and daunting system. JusticeCorps assistance allows people to accomplish the purpose of their visit more efficiently. Members receive thorough training, including about the activities in the courthouse, available resources and the difference between legal information and advice.
