STAIR of Birmingham is on a mission to improve the reading skills and self-esteem of second grade students in Birmingham City Schools.
Tutors develop one-on-one relationships, which make this volunteer experience such a rewarding and worthwhile effort. STAIR has an excellent, user-friendly curriculum that makes it easy for volunteers to follow with no outside prep time.
STAIR has 12 sites throughout the Birmingham area. Volunteers are needed one day per week (Mon, Tue, Wed or Thur) from 3:00PM-5:00PM from September to April.
Volunteer Commitment:
- Attend one 2-hour training class.
- Observe with another tutor one afternoon before being paired with a student.
- Tutor a student one afternoon a week, committing to a 2 hour timeframe (we follow the Birmingham City School calendar).
- Pass a background check.
