Join the Urban Forest Project and Citizen Foresters in helping to maintain trees across the City. During this AWTT we will prune trees along Lafayette to help them stay healthier, so that they need less care and have fewer problems as they mature. This is done by removing hazard, dead or dying limbs and crossing branches. We prune trees to decrease the risk for limb drops and tree falls, which endanger people and property. We prune trees to increase public knowledge of street trees as a resource, and to foster a deeper sense of public ownership and public appreciation of trees.

We’ll meet up at the corner of Lafayette & Fairbanks at 5:30pm. However, you’re welcome to show up late or leave early; work as much as you want. Every bit helps. We’ll wrap up around 7:30pm.

WHAT: Maintain some Trees that need our lovin’!
WHERE: Corner of Lafayette & Fairbanks
WHEN: Tuesday, August 1, 2017 5:30pm - 7:30 pm
WHY: City trees need love. Trees should be pruned every 3 to 5 years, yet the majority of street trees are pruned only every 10 to 12 years. This increases the risk for limb drops and tree falls, which endanger people and property.
WHO: Citizen Foresters and interested volunteers.
HOW: We’ve got the tools and expertise. Luckily, the trees are already there waiting for us!

RSVP TO JESSA AT JESSA@FRIENDSOFGRPARKS.ORG OR CALL OUR OFFICE AT 616-288-7209 TO LET US KNOW YOU’RE COMING.

This event fulfills the hands of pruning session needed to receive your citizen forester certification.

Mission Statement

Empowering people to cultivate vibrant parks, green spaces, and trees in our community.

Description

The mission of Friends of Grand Rapids Parks is to empower people to cultivate vibrant parks, trees, and green spaces in the Grand Rapids community. Our vision is thriving parks and a sustainable urban forest that actively supports our community’s economic, environmental, and cultural health. Our organization was founded in 2008, with the belief that all kids in our community are entitled to experiences in parks and opportunities to connect with nature. For some children in our community, their neighborhood park is their backyard; a place to discover their hidden talents and a place to build confidence in trying new things.
