Use your experience and interest in health education and immigrant integration to improve the lives of community members and their families! We need your help now more than ever.
Building Skills Partnership (BSP) is a labor-management non-profit that works in collaboration with the SEIU-USWW janitorial union to increase access to educational opportunities in order to improve the quality of life of low-income latino janitors and their families.
This summer we are re-launching a weekly class to give students a general overview about different health issues, and the tools to live a healthier lifestyle. Each week of class will start with a Zumba session, followed by a lesson/activity around different topics (Diabetes, Nutrition, Stress/Mental Health, etc...), and will finish up with a guest speaker from the community. During the week students will be encouraged to monitor their health by logging and using a pedometer.
We are looking for volunteers who believe in BSP’s mission of improving the quality of life of janitors and their families, to join us this summer!
Responsibilities will include:
Co-leading health class mini lessons/ activities
Helping students track their steps and report on the student blog
Collaborating on a student-run, health related digital literacy project (blog, facebook posts, app involvement, etc...)
Providing individual support as needed (preferably in Spanish, but support available for English speakers)
Preferred candidates will have
Bilingual skills in Spanish and English
Studying Public Health, Nursing, Pre-Med, Health Education, etc...
Strong interpersonal skills
Experience tutoring or teaching
Demonstrated commitment to social justice and/or immigrant rights
Strong sense of accountability and responsibility
Experience with marketing on social media
Entrepreneurial spirit and desire to implement new ideas/strategies
Interest in taking Zumba classes (definitely not necessary, but would be fun to learn with the students!)
To apply please send an email to Marcail@buildingskills.org.
Thanks and we can't wait for you to apply!
