Corsi Senior Center, located in East Harlem, Manhattan is a lively place that brings together older adults who want to be engaged in their communities and with their peers. Senior centers provide the services older adults need to be healthy, happy and as independent as they can be. Corsi Senior Center offers a wide range of services and activities for older adults, including hot meals, a variety of classes, social services and more. Corsi Senior Center needs 1 volunteer to lead an English as a Second Language (ESL) class for a small group of Spanish speaking older adults.

Tasks:

  • Create weekly lesson plans that will support participants speaking in English
  • Lead weekly ESL classes for 5-10 Spanish speaking older adults
  • Create and administer benchmark assessments to gauge progress of participants
  • Plan monthly socialization activities for participants

Skills Preferred:

  • Experience working with older adults preferred, but not required
  • TEFL, CELTA, TESOL or equivalent desired, but not required

Training:

  • Onsite senior center orientation will be provided

Time Commitment:

  • 2 consistent days per week, Mondays - Fridays
  • 1 - 2 hour class, between 10am - 12pm
  • Opportunity to start July 2017, or whenever opportunity is filled, and last for 3 months
Requirements:
  • Attend a DFTA Volunteer Information Session
  • Be fluent in spoken and written Spanish and English
  • Must have great communication and organizational skills
  • Maintain constructive relationships with center staff and students
  • Participate in an in-person interview with senior center staff
  • Submit DFTA Volunteer Time Sheet(s) for completed service

Aging Connect assists Older New Yorkers with getting connected with age-inclusive services, resources, and opportunities available to them from NYC agencies, senior centers, and other aging-related organizations. During the COVID-19 Crisis, Aging Connect has served as the primary contact and connector for older adults and the families in need of food, services, and information about senior center closures.
