SS Red Oak Victory

Volunteer for a floating museum with a history and a future! Come join a kick-butt group of determined volunteers as we restore the "SS Red Oak Victory", a WW II-era Victory ship, and build an innovative venue for alternative arts and education on this historic ship moored on a 1944 Victory ship in the original the Richmond shipyard!

The SS Red Oak Victory is one of three remaining 1944 Victory-class cargo ships built in WW II and the only surviving ship build in Richmond. We are part of the Richmond Museum Association, are a 501(c)(3) non-profit and all personnel in all departments are volunteers.

We are looking for two people to join our marketing team. Our ideal person will have experience in two or more of the following areas:

  • - Writing creative and compelling marketing content
  • - Designing and developing websites
  • - Optimizing web presence via SEO/SEM, Google AdWords, etc.
  • - Utilizing content management systems, e.g. WordPress
  • - Creating engaging on- and offline collateral
  • - Developing social media and email marketing and advertising
  • - Designing, creating and promoting public events
  • - Marketing of meeting spaces, venues, and commercial rentals
  • - Developing e-commerce; adding on-line sales to existing physical ship’s store
  • - Evaluating and understanding customer demographics
  • - Organizing outreach to diverse Bay Area communities

We are seeking people with experience working successfully in volunteer-run, non-profit organizations or commercial enterprises. An interest in the history of the Bay Area, nautical history, military history, or industrial history is a plus.

The ideal volunteer will have experience working in website platforms such as WordPress, and social-media such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. We are looking for those who can work actively and creatively problem-solving in a team environment. Patience with techno-challenged individuals is a must! Much of the work can be done remotely but attendance at some team meetings on the ship is expected. We are looking for volunteers who can work five to ten hours per week, although any amount of time commitment is valuable to us.

From US Navy and Merchant Marine history, from the story of women and minorities in the workforce, the SS Red Oak Victory stands as a platform for the genesis of culture-shaping experiences. Sailors and merchant marines on the SS Red Oak Victory served in WWII, the Korean War and Vietnam. Women put on work-pants and welder’s masks and became known as "Rosie the Riveter" or "Wanda the Welder". Americans of all ethnicities contributed to the war effort and built Victory ships together.

E-mail our Marketing Director (, today with a brief description of your experience and we’ll arrange for you to visit the ship and talk with our marketing team.
