Amazon Ecology is a non-profit organization that helps native artisans from 18 communities in the Peruvian Amazon to develop and market innovative handicrafts to create sustainable livelihoods. We host workshops to help artisans learn to make innovative fair trade handicrafts, create effective artisan organizations, plant more trees used to make crafts, and build resilient communities. We are a member of the Fair Trade Federation, so we pay our artisan partners promptly and reinvest part of our sales to support health, education and forest conservation in our partner communities.

We have a great opportunity to sell a wide range of hand-made Amazon crafts in our booth at the Rhythm and Roots Festival that will be held at Ninigret Park in Charlestown, Rhode Island from Sept. 2 to 4 (booth setup on Sept. 1).

We can offer a free pass to the festival (worth $254 for a full-festival camping pass) plus an $80 allowance for food to one Amazon Champion who commits to help us with set-up on Thursday afternoon (9/1) and help out at the booth for 3 hours per day on Friday and Saturday, and help pack up the booth on Sunday night (8/4).

We also need enthusiastic Amazon Ambassador volunteers for a minimum four hour shift (times negotiable) to welcome visitors to our booth to sell our partners’ crafts, share information about our partners, products and programs, and support playful engagement around our booth on social media. All training provided onsite.

For more information about Amazon Ecology, visit our website at www.AmazonEcology.org. See videos about our partners and work at: https://www.youtube.com/user/amazonecology/videos

All potential volunteers will be interviewed in advance by the founder and Executive Director of Amazon Ecology to ensure a good fit between the volunteer's interests, abilities, commitment and the needs of the position.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Center for Amazon Community Ecology is to promote the understanding, conservation and sustainable development of human and other biological communities in the Amazon region. Our three strategies are research, community support and education. One of our main goals is to study the ecology and develop the sustainable harvest and marketing of non-timber forest products such as fruits, fibers, resins, and oils. We also work with indigenous and other forest peoples to sustain local resources and support their communities.

Description

The main strategies for achieving our goals are research, community support, and education. This will include investigating the ecology and sustainable harvest of non-timber forest products (like resins, fruits and fibers) and assisting indigenous and other forest-based communities to manage and market them to support local development and conservation. This will require reaching out to and connecting many people and communities in the Amazon and abroad. CACE is a member of the Fair Trade Federation.
