Position Description:
This administrative position will be tasked with filing documents, creating and managing spreadsheets, creating and updating resource sheets, and more. The volunteer will have the chance to help distribute food to our program participants twice a month, and may assist in finding rental property or contacting parking lot owners to inquire about parking spots. There will also be the opportunity to assist staff on street outreach efforts every other week. Volunteers with an interest can also help create outreach and informational materials for the program.
This position will allow the intern to witness firsthand the inner workings of a nonprofit program serving a subset of the homeless population. Furthermore, the intern will witness case management meetings with clients and gain insight into the challenges faced by the vehicular homeless. If you are interested in assisting the homeless or gaining a look into the field of social work and the nonprofit sector, then consider applying!!
About the Safe Parking Program:
The Safe Parking Program provides safe overnight parking for qualified individuals and families who are living in their vehicles. The program is a cooperative between New Beginnings, local law enforcement, faith-based organizations and merchants, non-profits, the Cities of Goleta and Santa Barbara, and the County of Santa Barbara, where the participating institutions provide parking places for vehicle dwellers. The program currently offers 126 spaces at 22 dispersed locations in the greater Santa Barbara area. Each lot offers free nightly parking for one to 15 vehicles, depending on location.
The purpose of the program is to provide the level of stability needed for vehicle dwellers to effectively make positive changes in their lives and become re-employed and re-housed as quickly as possible. In addition to parking, New Beginnings offers social services and case management to help them achieve this end. Program participants meet with staff regularly to participate in intensive case management geared towards meeting their individual needs with the goal of ultimately getting the client(s) back into permanent, stable housing.
