Mission Statement

Description

Founded by Dr. Armand Hammer in 1988 in partnership with Sherry Lansing, STOP CANCER is a nonprofit, tax-exempt volunteer organization located in Los Angeles, California. Its mission is to fund the most promising and innovative scientists in their early research of all forms of cancer prevention, treatment, cures and subsequent clinical applications. STOP CANCER works with National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers (NCI) and other hospitals in the United States to carry out its mission. To date, STOP CANCER has funded a total of 158 Awards to 120 researchers with support valued at over $53 million.

Sherry Lansing, President of the Sherry Lansing Foundation, and member of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine’s Independent Citizens’ Oversight Committee (the governing board), is Chair of STOP CANCER. Robert and Sharon Wiviott are Presidents. All work of the Officers, Board of Directors and Committees is provided on a volunteer basis.

STOP CANCER funds Research Career Development Awards and Seed Grants to young researchers at UCLA’s Jonsson, USC Norris and City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Centers, each affiliated with (NCI) -- the only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in Los Angeles County. In addition, STOP CANCER funds the USC’s Norris Pediatric Cancer Program at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and the Mattel Children’s Hospital at UCLA.

Because of STOP CANCER’s arrangement with each Cancer Center, every donated dollar is matched with in-kind support, thereby doubling its value. As a result, young, innovative researchers who receive Research Career Development Awards are provided funding by STOP CANCER for three years at $50,000 per year for a total of $150,000. The additional $150,000 of in-kind support from the Awardee’s institution provides a total value of $300,000 for each Award. STOP CANCER also provides one-year $25,000 Seed Grants under the same conditions, for a total value of $50,000. In each Award, the use of funding is restricted to research and may not be used for any other purpose. Awardees provide various updates on their research. Special Memorial Grants are donated on occasion.
