Do you see yourself as a mentor and educator? Do you like to tinker with challenges or maybe even know your way around the computer? Are you excited about energizing the next generation? Bytes For Bits may be the opportunity for you!

We are looking for Teaching Assistants to not only engage elementary schoolers so that they roll up their sleeves and code but also generate the excitement and enthusiasm so that those students continue forward after our classes are complete.

We provide an eight to ten week afterschool program. A typical classroom will have twelve to fifteen eager kids champing at the bit to learn how to program and play. Classes meet once a week and usually start around 3:30PM. Each class is one hour long.

Lesson plans are documented and modular. Each class introduces some base concepts and then has a number of challenges from which teachers and students choose. Most students work in Scratch ( www.scratch.mit.edu ), a visual programming platform, where they click code blocks together like Legos to make characters move and interact.

Lead Teachers work in the classroom with a team of Teaching Assistants (comprised of college interns and volunteers). We generally target a 5:1 student-to-teacher ratio. Bytes For Bits prefers individuals who can commit to the full eight to ten week class cycle but will consider engagements as short as four weeks. Although Computer Science or Education backgrounds are nice, successful assistants really only need to bring their energy to the classroom, get involved with kids, and help students learn to code. You DO NOT need to be a super coder for this role, though you’ll need to apply yourself to learn Scratch so you can teach the material. Our kids are typically 8-11 years old, so your high school level coding knowledge is more than adequate!

Classes are ongoing during the school semester, and summer camps, across (7) schools in San Francisco, (2) schools in Piedmont, (1) in Oakland, and (1) in Marin county

All personnel are required to complete a background check and a TB Assessment.

Mission Statement

Bytes for Bits is a non-profit organization working to inspire, educate, and equip students with the skills and resources to pursue their interests in coding. Our mission is to help children develop the necessary Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) skills within a creative and collaborative environment. All children, regardless of socioeconomic, gender, or ethnic background, should have the opportunity to learn to code.

Description

Bytes for Bits is a weekly after school program for elementary school kids, teaching the fundamentals of software coding using the Scratch platform developed out of MIT. Our mission is to educate children in a manner that not only develops the necessary STEM skills but also does so within a creative, collaborative, and fun environment.

Our classes occur at over 10 elementary schools across San Francisco and the East Bay. By offering classes at the actual school, it enables children of dual-working parents to attend coding without requiring transport to an offsite location.

In addition to school sites, Bytes for Bits partners with community supportive organizations such as Boys' and Girls' Club and YMCA, to offering classes during summer camp(s) and after school.
