Overview

The Garden Guide Volunteer acts as the host/hostess to gardens and grounds. The volunteer will explain the garden, hand out garden literature and answer questions. Be a Goodwill ambassador for the gardens. The Garden Guide Volunteer will also assist guests with any other questions regarding the grounds and historic homes on the site.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Discuss different plants/trees and history of Garden

  • Greet and help orient guests in the Garden

  • Assist guests around the grounds

  • Respond to guest inquiries

  • Answer guest questions regarding the historic site, Salem and surrounding area, other attractions in town in a positive and non-opinionated manner.

Qualifications

  • Background in gardening

  • Knowledge of types of plants and trees

  • Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills

  • Must have the ability to deal effectively and courteously with the public and other staff members

  • Be guest focused

  • Have a basic knowledge of historic Salem

  • Must have the ability to work outside for extended time

  • Be presentable, well groomed, and wear name badge with lanyard (given by The Gables)
