Lutheran Services Florida (LSF) is in a position to effectively utilize an AmeriCorps VISTA member in our LSF Health Systems entity. LSF Health Systems works in partnership with the Florida Department of Children and Families in managing behavioral health care for impoverished populations across 23 counties, and served nearly 300,000 people through outreach programs last year. Stability of housing and financial resources are basic life requirements that directly impact individual and community resilience in the face of natural disasters and/or chronic or episodic mental illness. The project goal for the VISTA is to improve community resilience by engaging the community in an examination of current gaps in overall resilience, and addressing the specific health-based gaps in resilience in low-income communities. The VISTA will work with LSF, other nonprofits, government agencies, and community stakeholders to increase community housing resources available to individuals with behavioral health challenges and increase financial stability for adults with mental illness who are homeless, at risk of homelessness, or displaced due to natural disaster. LSF believes these goals and their associated objectives fit well with the CNCS priorities of addressing poverty, building capacity and resiliency at both the individual and community level.

The VISTA will facilitate improvements to community resilience by engaging the community in an examination of current gaps in overall resilience, and addressing the resilience in low-income communities.
