Momentum Collective Inc. is partnering with the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority to provide an after-school arts program to elementary and middle school youth who live in subsidized housing in Alexandria, VA. The creative writing instructor will teach beginner level youth the fundamentals of creative writing and prepare them to present their work as part of a performing arts showcase later in the school year. Volunteers will also receive support on how to incorporate academic elements into the writing classes. This opportunity is on Mondays from 5:30pm to 7:00pm and will require direct and in-person interaction with youth. As a result, we require that all volunteers be fully vaccinated, and be able to provide proof of vaccination, or submit weekly COVID-19 test results.
This initiative is part of the "Stylus Project" and is part of a larger initiative called the MPWRD Program that focuses on the arts and developing marketable skills in program participants. Instructors will help students develop:
- poems
- songs/raps
- short stories/one act plays
- speech writing
Specific focus will be placed on exploring works from minority writers and helping participants improve language arts proficiency. Group size will not exceed 10 participants. Volunteers must be comfortable working with youth from various socio-economic backgrounds.
