The Society of California Pioneers is looking for dedicated and passionate volunteers to assist in welcoming visitors to the museum. Our museum, located on the historic Main Post in the picturesque Presidio of San Francisco, features rotating exhibitions about diverse topics relating to early California. Past examples include: businesses founded during the Gold Rush that are still in operation, The Society's collection of daguerreotypes, and, sheet music for historic songs about California.

Museum Gallery Docents are responsible for providing a pleasant and welcoming environment in the museum and providing information about the exhibitions and the Presidio, while maintaining a safe and respecful atmosphere for the exhibited art and artifacts. Volunteers should have an interest in California history and engaging with audiences of all ages.

Each Museum Gallery Docent will be accompanied by a staff member of The Society of California Pioneers during his or her three-hour shift. The primary audience of the museum on weekend days are tourists visiting the Presidio of San Francisco, often coming from around the world to learn about our state's unique history. Our museum welcomes many families and school groups with a desire to learn about California history through primary source material. As a Musum Gallery Docent, a welcoming demeanor and the ability to interact with different types of people in a cordial and customer-oriented manner are important.

Established in 1850, The Society of California Pioneers is a not-for-profit museum, library, and cultural organization dedicated to advancing the knowledge and appreciation of early California history for the benefit of present and future audiences of all ages.

Description

The Society of California Pioneers is an independent not-for-profit organization. All services provided to the public are free of charge, with a $5 suggested donation. Located on the historic Main Post in the Presidio of San Francisco, this organization operates a museum and research library, which are both free and open to the public. The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10:00-5:00pm, while the library is open by appointment Tuesday through Friday.

The museum features rotating exhibitions on subjects that highlight our large collection of early California art, artifacts, and ephemera. A portion of the gallery is dedicated to our semi-permanent display for museum education programs, telling the story of the Gold Rush through primary source material. Our museum attracts diverse groups, including scouts and seniors, although our primary audience for education programs are 4th and 5th Graders learning about California history. On the weekends, our primary audience is tourists visiting the historic and beautiful Presidio.
