ORGANIZATION: GLOBAL VOLUNTEERS

Deep in West Virginia there are "empowerment zones" characterized by poverty and unemployment; these friendly coal-mining towns are seeking your help. You have the chance to volunteer in a part of the USA most Americans have forgotten.

For almost 20 years our volunteers in Appalachia have provided essential services to our partner’s community revitalization programs in West Virginia’s Fayette County. The Southern Appalachian Labor School (SALS) provides education and networking for working class and disenfranchised peoples, while it also rehabilitates rundown and energy inefficient homes for low-income families.

Contribute your time and skills, and experience a world misunderstood by casual visitors - acquainting yourself with the dreams, struggles and successes of Appalachian people. You can work one-on-one with children, teens and adults on education, labor, and cultural projects. Your help will be greatly appreciated and you will love this land, its people, and the opportunity to get to know them and support them.
