Bereavement Facilitator
Support grieving children

The Children's Grief Center of New Mexico is able to provide free support services to grieving children through the dedication and service of volunteer Bereavement Facilitators - from all walks of life! BF's take the CGC training, complete a background check and interview process, and commit to a year of service. Our next training will be held January 11th &12th, 2020. The training covers communication techniques, explores one's own experiences and attitudes toward grief & cultural aspects of grief, teaches skills for being a support group facilitator, and includes role plays . After training, volunteers are assigned to a support group of either children or adults, which meet twice per month throughout the school year; Tuesday or Wednesday evenings in the North Valley or on Thursday evenings in Rio Rancho. New support group facilitators are paired with and mentored by more experienced facilitators in their group. Facilitators plan age-appropriate activities and provide a safe and supportive environment for children & adults to talk about their feelings surrounding a death. Time commitment is 5:15pm - 8:30pm on your chosen group night, twice per month!

Mission Statement

The mission of the Children's Grief Center of New Mexico is to provide a safe and supportive environment in which children, teens and thier families can share experiences and feelings while grieving a death.

Description

The Children's Grief Center of NM (CGC) provides free support groups for children ages 5-18 who are grieving the death of someone they loved. Typically the child has lost a parent or a sibling. CGC recognizes that the caregivers of these children, often grieving themselves, also need support. Optional adult support groups are offered.

Groups last for an hour and 15 minutes, and occur every other week. East side (NE heights) groups meet on every other Tuesday, while west side groups meet on every other Thursday. Before groups begin, the families come together to eat a simple meal provided by the CGC. This allows families to "decompress", talk to other families who are experiencing the same thing, and calmly prepare for the emotional rigors of a grief support group.

CGC is the only organization of its kind in Central New Mexico. Bereaved families travel from as far away as Jemez Springs, Los Lunas, and Edgewood. Groups are open and on-going, so families can begin at any time of the year and end whenever they feel it's appropriate.
