Mission Statement
Our mission is to empower people to meet the opportunities and challenges posed by cultural diversity and by technological change through education.
Description
Founded in 1975 by Liza Loop, Dean Brown, and Stuart Cooney, LO*OP Center has long been an educational innovator, introducing thousands of children and adults to their first experiences with computing. LO*OP brought the first Apple Computer into a school in 1976, brought Soviet and American teenagers together as citizen diplomats in 1985, taught educational technology to senior Malaysian educators in 1987, developed new English as a Second Language (ESL) evaluation methods for US industry in 1990 and founded the Intercultural Resources Forum in 1991. In the ’90, LO*OP continued its work in Russia through the interactive museum program, Touch Science -Russia, and explored new applications of cognitive science to non-formal learning environments.
After a quiet period during the last decade, LO*OP is now embarked on building a virtual (online) museum featuring the History of Computing in Learning and Education (HCLE.org).
HCLE covers the pre-web decades 1960-1990 when the development and popularization of microcomputers opened new opportunities in formal and non-formal learning. HCLE preserves, presents and interprets artifacts, documents, images and software from this era to the public so that the lessons learned during this formative period are not lost to future generations.
