The Hummingbird Palace

Come out and help us garden and maintain the home for hummingbirds at the Hummingbird Palace!

I am looking for volunteers to help with the ongoing maintenance of The Hummingbird Palace, an environmental sculpture located in Lippitt Park, (at the end of Blackstone Blvd). The piece now has well established vines growing on it and I am looking for someone who is interested in helping with the gardening around it. You can come in every week or so to keep it weeded and prune the vines. This could also be a nice opportunity for someone who would like to come up with some new ideas for additional plantings, as there is an underground watering system already present there.

Additionally the 10 hummingbird feeders that are on the piece need to be changed weekly. You can garden and change the feeders or work with other volunteers and divvy the work! Changing the feeders involves getting on a ladder to bring the feeders down, washing and putting them back up with new nectar. Typically this task takes around 45 minutes. We have a volunteer who has been doing this for several years, but it would be great to add another volunteer to possibly give her a season off.

This is an ongoing opportunity, primarily from May until Sept. If you like being outdoors in the park, this is an opportunity that is not a huge time commitment. This might also be ideal for someone who is retired.

Lastly, there is a website and facebook page for The Hummingbird Palace. A volunteer who would like to post photos and keep the site more active would also be a great addition.
