Mission
Neighbor to Neighbor is a mentoring program designed to provide additional support for our HousingWorks tenants. The transition into housing can be a difficult process and the level/type of support needed to maintain housing and address lingering effects of chronic homelessness varies from tenant to tenant.
Vision
With the collaboration of mentors, tenants, and social workers and a mentoring experience specialized to meet the needs specific to each tenant, this program can be a useful resource for housing retention. The mentorship can also provide an opportunity for a tenant to learn a new skill or partake in a new hobby with their mentor and increase positive socialization that can enhance their quality of life.
Goals
- Collaboration between social worker, tenant, and mentor to identify possible challenges/interests related to housing retention
- Identification of the strengths of the tenant that can be used for self-empowerment
- Specialization of the mentorship to be centered on the strengths of the tenant
- Lifelong friendship between mentor and mentee
- Advocacy efforts for affordable and permanent supportive housing for at-risk adults and people still suffering from homelessness
Mentor Role
- With the help of the social worker, take the lead in supporting a tenant through an ongoing, one-on-one relationship
- Spend two hours per week with your mentee, for a total of 10 hours a month
- Listen and provide feedback that empowers the tenant
- Attend monthly training sessions to support you and your mentee
- Build the relationship by participating in Neighbor to Neighbor events
- Encourage positive self-esteem and self-sufficiency
- Share and learn new talents and skills with your mentee

Mission Statement
The Urban Ministry Center is an interfaith organization dedicated to bringing the community together to end homelessness, one life at a time.
Description
Since 1994, with the collaboration of community partners, we strive to meet the basic needs of our fellow Charlottean neighbors to alleviate poverty and end homelessness. Managed by dedicated staff and volunteers, our soup kitchen is open 365 days of the year to serve lunch to 150-300 individuals. Combining the efforts of staff and volunteers, those in need can use our facility for basic services such as showers, laundry, phones, and mail services. Our team of volunteer counselors connect individuals to our community partners for resources such as food referrals, clothing assistance, housing, and employment resources. Volunteers and those seeking services can participate in our CommunityWorks program which encourages self-expression and empowerment through art, soccer, gardening, and running. We also offer educational opportunities for community members to learn more about homelessness and its social implications through presentations to your group and simulations such as Walk in My Shoes. Thanks to community donations, o ur Homeless to Homes pilot project raised funds to build and run Moore Place (opened in 2012) and a larger HousingWorks program. Our HousingWorks program operates under the HousingFirst model which houses those who are most at-risk first and then provides services to maintain housing. This includes working with a social worker to address any lingering problems throughout this transition. The Urban Ministry Center hopes to bring together all Charlotteans to inspire innovative ways of addressing homelessness and poverty in our city.
