Thames River Heritage Park Water Taxi
The collection of heritage sites in the Park are linked by a Water Taxi that does a one-hour hop on-hop off continuous loop for riders to visit all the sites on both shores of the Thames River.

Park Ambassadors

Our volunteers will be our Park Ambassadors interacting with visitors and local residents as they arrive at the water taxi landings in Groton and New London. One responsibility will be helping to take survey information from water taxi riders. The visitor surveys provide us with vital information that we use for our marketing, programming, and fundraising efforts. Our survey is a very brief questionnaire that water taxi riders can easily fill in themselves or answer for you to fill in.

Volunteers will also help us with providing visitors with information about the water taxis, the sites and events in the Park, directions, and with handing out brochures.

Volunteers should enjoy interacting with people, have good verbal communications, and like being outdoors and active. Riding the taxis is optional. Knowing the area is helpful but not necessary for survey intake. Training will be provided.

Volunteers are asked to sign up for 2- or 4-hours shifts Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., Memorial weekend through mid-September. We ask for a minimum commitment of 16 hours during the season.

Mission Statement

The Thames River Heritage Park Foundation is a nonprofit organization whose mission and purpose is to develop, promote, coordinate, and help preserve a new type of Connecticut state park known as the Thames River Heritage Park. The park include sites of national and historical significance along the Thames River in and around the City and Town of Groton and New London, located across from each other near the mouth of the river. The Foundation carries out its mission in collaboration with the State of Connecticut, the United States Coast Guard, the United States Navy, local municipalities and regional authorities, and the numerous heritage sites within its area. A primary role of the Foundation is the oversight and operation of a water shuttle system designed to transport visitors to and from sites of significance on both sides of the Thames River.

Description

The Thames River Heritage Park is a collection of national and historic sites along two shores of the Thames River that tell the stories that shaped our nation during the past 400 years and that will influence generations to follow.

The sites are linked by seasonal water taxis - two historic navy vessels, which transport visitors to three landing sites in New London and Groton. Visitors can enjoy the sites and local businesses at each stop and continue their ride at their leisure.

Experiential activities and programming introduce visitors to the stories of the river that celebrate our diverse traditions and cultures. From pre-revolutionary and civil war eras to a vibrant whaling hub to the Submarine Capital of the World, the Thames River Heritage Park is a reflection of America today as well as those who have come before us.
