2017 Wood River Watershed Day: Stream Monitoring and Cleanup

You are invited to join Illinois RiverWatch and One Mississippi on June 24 th in Bethalto for water quality monitoring and trash pickup on Rocky Branch and West Fork of Wood River streams. These streams flow into Wood River Creek, which is on the Illinois EPA’s "impaired streams" list for polluted waters. Your assistance will help determine what the water quality of Rocky Branch and East Fork of Wood River is and clean them up to improve river health for the future. You can stay all day or choose which part of the event you will participate in.

Schedule for June 24 th:
9 am-noon: Water quality monitoring
Noon - 1 pm: Lunch and stream pollution presentation
1 pm - 3 pm: Stream cleanup

Mission Statement
The Illinois RiverWatch Network safeguards the future of Illinois rivers and streams through stewardship, education and sound science. RiverWatch utilizes trained volunteers to collect quality assured data on wadeable streams and fosters coordination among groups involved in similar monitoring efforts.
Description
The Illinois RiverWatch Network is a volunteer monitoring initiative coordinated by the National Great Rivers Research and Education Center.
- Goal The primary goals of the program are to measure how the conditions of our state's streams are changing over time, and to educate Illinois citizens about the ecology of Illinois’ water resources.
- What do volunteers do? RiverWatch Citizen Scientists conduct annual habitat and biological surveys of their adopted stream site(s) during May and June. They collect and identify small aquatic organisms that are important indicators of stream health.
- Where will you monitor? Citizen Scientists adopt a 200-foot stretch of wadeable stream to monitor near to their job, home, or school.
- What happens to the data? Data is available to the public and can be downloaded from the database.
- Who can participate? RiverWatch welcomes families, organizations, and interested individuals! No prior experience is required.
- How much will it cost to join? While we charge a small, one-time training workshop fee, there are no membership fees. Monitoring equipment can be borrowed from any one of our loaner kit locations.
