Do you want to have fun, meet great people, and support local art at the same time? Arts Fair on the Square needs YOU!
Please help us celebrate our 37th Season by joining in the fun on the best arts day in Bloomington, June 17th! Arts Fair on the Square takes place downtown right on the Monroe County Courthouse lawn and surrounding streets, the center of the square. Arts Fair on the Square is open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., however, we begin setup at a thrilling 5:00 a.m. and complete teardown at approximately 7:00 p.m. the same day. In order to make this magic happen, we need amazing volunteers like YOU! Please join us to make the 2017 Arts Fair on the Square the best yet.
Sign up for flexible hours in a wide variety of positions integral to supporting the fair and our artists. We currently need Traffic Control and Check-In & Setup Assistants the most; however, we will gladly work with your availability and interests. Sign up for as many, or few, of the two-to-four hour shifts that you like or let us know what times work better for you and we will happily add you to our team.

Purpose: The position of Event Management Intern is to aid the Event Manager and Assistant Manager with the planning, preparation, coordination, and implementation of event logistics leading up and including the day of the Fair. The Event Management Intern will help process artist applications, assign artist and community booth spaces, arrange and coordinate entertainment, assist with volunteer coordination, help with marketing and public relations, and other duties as needed.
Time Commitment: Approximately 3 - 5 hours weekly now through June 17, 2017. Preferred availability includes most evenings the week of June 12 th and all day June 17 th .
Key Responsibilities:
Assist with all event logistics
Plan and implement marketing and public relations
Other duties as assigned
Purpose: The position of Assistant Graphic Designer is to aid the Event Manager with the graphic design and implementation for Arts Fair on the Square including but not limited to event brochures, signage, and billboard design.
Time Commitment: Flexible, project based.
Key Responsibilities:
Update and prepare brand materials for 2017
Digitally update and create print materials
Print and prepare some print materials
Purpose: The position of Volunteer Coordinator is to recruit, assist in training, schedule, and manage volunteers for the day of the Fair. Primary recruitment is through the City of Bloomington Volunteer Network and the Bloomington Playwrights Project volunteer connections. The Volunteer Coordinator is encouraged to expand current volunteer recruiting methods and organize a sustainable volunteer program.
Time Commitment: Varies. Preferred availability includes several evenings the week of June 12 th and all day June 17 th .
Key Responsibilities:
Recruit, train, schedule, and manage volunteers
Purpose: The position of Check In & Set Up Assistant is to show artist to their booth spaces, help artists unload supplies, and set up materials and various spaces for Arts Fair on the Square.
Time Commitment: There are two 2-hour shifts for Check In & Set Up Assistant volunteers;
5:30 am to 7:30 am or 7:30 am to 9:30 am
Key Responsibilities:
Help put out signage for event
Show artists to their booth spaces
Help unload artists’ supplies
Set up fair tables and materials
Provide coffee or water to the artists during setup
Other duties as assigned
Traffic Control AssistantPurpose: Maintain order and the flow of vehicular traffic around the square as artists arrive and begin to unload, help manage the flow of traffic during setup and teardown.
Time Commitment: There are three 2-hour shifts for Traffic Control Assistant volunteers;
5:30 am to 7:30 am , 7:30 am to 9:30 am , or 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm
Key Responsibilities:
Help set up and control traffic signage for the event
Assist in directing vehicles for unloading and loading
Manage the flow of traffic around the courthouse
Other duties as assigned
Purpose:
To provide water and other supplies to the artists, watch artist booths when artists are in need of a break, assist entertainment groups with setup and teardown, and monitor fair attendance every 30 minutes. Other duties as assigned.
Time Commitment: There are four 2-hour shifts for Daily Runner volunteers;
10:00 am to 12:00 pm , 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm , 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm or 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm*
*Clean up of all information tent, materials, and tables from 5:30 pm to 6:00 pm
Key Responsibilities:
Watch artist booths when artists are in need of a break
Provide water to artists
Assist entertainment groups with setup and teardown
Monitor fair attendance every 30 minutes
Other duties as assigned
Children’s Art Center AssistantPurpose: Children’s Art Center Assistants will explain art projects and assist participants in the creation of their artwork if necessary. Children’s Art Center Assistant will also make sure that the art center table is clean, organized, and stocked in accordance with traffic needs.
Time Commitment: There are four 2-hour shifts for Children’s Art Center volunteers;
10:00 am to 12:00 pm , 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm , 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm , or 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm *
*Clean up of all art center materials and table from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm
Key Responsibilities:
Monitor the Children’s Art Center activity table
Maintain supplies in area
Other duties as assigned
Purpose: Interactive Art Center Assistants will explain art projects to participants and assist them in the creation of their artwork if needed. The Interactive Art Center Assistant will also make sure that the art center is clean, organized, and stocked in accordance with traffic needs.
Time Commitment: There are four 2-hour shifts for Interactive Art Center volunteers;
10:00 am to 12:00 pm , 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm , 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm , or 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm *
*Clean up of all art center materials and table from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm
Key Responsibilities:
Monitor the Interactive Art Center activities
Maintain supplies in area
Help with creating artwork if needed
Other duties as assigned
Purpose: Check Out & Tear Down Assistants ensure that all artists are checked out in a timely fashion, help the artists break down their booths if necessary, assist artists in taking items to their vehicles, maintain a well-organized loading zone schedule, monitor loading zones times, and ensure that the courthouse grounds are clean and free of debris.
Time Commitment: 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm
Key Responsibilities:
Check booth areas to ensure artists are ready for checkout
Direct artists to checkout
Assist artists with transportation of supplies to vehicles as needed
Help with clean up after the event
Other duties as assigned
Purpose: Digitally document all of the fair including artist booths, demonstrations, and entertainment. Previous experience required. Equipment preferred. All resulting imagery is property of the Bloomington Playwrights Project. Disc of the digital images required within 48 hours of fair close.
Time Commitment: Flexible two to four hour shifts.

The Bloomington Playwrights Project (BPP) is the only professional theatre in the entire state of Indiana dedicated solely to new plays. In operation for 35 years, we serve both the Bloomington and national theatre community by working with talented playwrights, actors, and artists to develop high-level productions for our local patrons as well as the many audiences attending subsequent productions of scripts that originated here at the BPP. We are an advocate for playwrights and new plays and believe firmly that they are not only important but absolutely vital to the future of our art form.
