The Hoboken Secret Gardens Tour is one of our most popular volunteer opportunities, because you get to experience the tour for free, as a guide. It's a 2.5-hour guided walking tour through 9 private gardens in Hoboken, NJ, as a fundraiser for the Hoboken Historical Museum. Tickets are $30 in advance or $35 day of tour.

No gardening expertise is needed, as volunteers' job is mostly to keep a group of about 15 tour goers together and keeping them moving along the route so they don't bump into the group before or after -- tours leave every 15 - 30 minutes. The tour usually takes about two and a half hours, so comfortable shoes and stamina are strongly recommended. Volunteers should report to the Hoboken Museum, 1301 Hudson St., at the beginning of their shift, which includes a half-hour of orientation. The number is 201-656-2240.

We need at least 55 volunteers for the Garden Tour, so please invite friends to volunteer with you, as we always can use more volunteers. Please note, in case of a heavy rain forecast, the committee may move the tour to the rain date, Sunday, June 11. You will be notified as soon as the decision has been made.

Description

The Hoboken Historical Museum (est. 1986) collects and displays artifacts in themed exhibitions on Hoboken history and offers educational programs, lectures, tours and hosts films and plays. We are a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

Recent exhibits have included a focus on Hoboken's relationship with the Hudson River and its role as a sweets producer. Other exhibits included shipping history, an anniversary of the movie "On the Waterfront," the city's contributions to the world of music, and its struggle and revival through the 1970s. Our upper gallery space features six local artists' work per year.

We are open six days a week in a 2,000-square-foot space in one of the oldest buildings on Hoboken's waterfront, the former Bethlehem Steel machine shop, now known as the Shipyard.

We also publish books and walking-tour maps, as well as a series of oral history chapbooks documenting the diverse communities of Hoboken's recent past. Each exhibit offers a tailored curriculum for local schools and groups of youngsters.
