A living lab for better urban waterways, PortSide NewYork, brings WaterStories to life. PortSide produces and hosts WaterStories programs in the arts; education; preservation; resiliency; and workforce and harbor advocacy, on and off our flagship: the historic tanker MARY A. WHALEN.

Summer 2017, PortSide seeks 3 outgoing, community-oriented interns to work 20 hours a week, whose work would include:

1. Work as a ship docent during TankerTours and as a deck monitor during TankerTime. Some of this work is on weekends and in the evenings.

2. Community outreach as part of our Red Hook WaterStories (RHWS) project. Outreach involves going to retail businesses in the Red Hook neighborhood to ask them about their business to update their listing in RHWS, and asking if we can post a RHWS sticker in their window, if they want to sponsor our programs, and if they are willing to host a rack of resiliency (flood preparation) info.

3. Community outreach to public housing residents, organizations and administration to grow participation by public housing residents in our programs. Similar outreach to several local senior centers.

4. Odd jobbing around the ship and office

Qualifications
* Interest in working in our offices on a historic ship
* Outgoing, articulate, comfortable approaching strangers
* Comfortable dealing with diverse constituents. Spanish bilingual is a plus.
* Experience in hospitality sector, running community programs or event production is highly desirable.
* Comfortable working outdoors
* Organized worker with careful attention to detail
* Ability to cheerfully work both independently and collaboratively, take initiative, and an eagerness to learn and develop new skills
* Able to spontaneously adjust to changing situations on the job
* Familiar with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook), Adobe Creative Suite, and social media
* Boating experience is desirable

Interns are not stuck with scut work. We believe it is our responsibility to provide quality, learning experiences for students, and we take time out to mentor our interns and have maintained relationships with many former interns years after they have left us. The position is unpaid, but we find ways to give interns some things of value via our sponsors (rides on other boats, gift certificates at businesses, etc).
