Founded in 1982, the Nisqually Reach Nature Center (NRNC) promotes the understanding, appreciation, and conservation of the Nisqually estuary through education, interpretation, and community science. We are situated in one of the most beautiful locations in South Puget Sound overlooking the Nisqually Estuary at Luhr Beach. Our educational programs and activities inspire students and community members of all ages to care about the natural world. NRNC reaches over 3,500 students every year through our innovative educational programming. NRNC also coordinates citizen science programs to help collect data about Puget Sound’s unique ecosystems.
The organization is governed by a motivated board of directors guiding 3 current staff positions (Executive Director, Science Director, and Education Director) and over 150 volunteers. We’re currently seeking additional board members to help guide NRNC into the future. This is a volunteer position.
Expectations of ServiceTo support the mission of the NRNC, board members are generally expected to assume the following responsibilities:
- Cooperate and work with other board members and staff on NRNC goals
- Attend at least 9 board meetings each year; board meetings are held monthly
- Support the fundraising, outreach, and organizational development efforts of the NRNC
- Serve on (2) committees related to board member service (i.e. communications committee, development committee, etc)
- Recruit, hire, and/or review Executive Director and other staff as needed
- Support annual fundraising events and identify potential new funding sources
Preferred Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
NRNC is currently seeking individuals with backgrounds or expertise in:
- Marketing; communications; design
- Grant writing
- Business management; non-profit administration
- Liability and Law
- Tribal members; experience in Tribal relations
- Accounting; bookkeeping; financial management
- Fundraising; organizational development
- Interpretation, Education and pedagogy
- Research with a focus on natural sciences
